GMB Messaging for Desktop Has Rolled Out

Google My Business (GMB) is a free tool that permits you to promote a business profile on Google Maps and search features. It can include location and website information for your business, thereby making it easier for prospective customers to find and contact you. Now GMB is rolling out a Messenger feature for your desktop dashboard. This will permit easier communication between you and your customers. Here is more about GMB’s new feature:

How to opt in — GMB business users will need to opt into the messaging service. Sign in to your account on GMB (set one up if you don’t have one, it’s free) and go to Messages then Settings. Click “turn on Messaging”. If new to GMB click Messages then “turn on Messages”. You can always turn it off later if you don’t want it.

Automate your initial response — You can set up an automated initial response so customers get a reply from you immediately. This gives you time to review their message and then you can respond later with a more detailed message. Take the time to create an automated message that reflects your company’s voice or business message. That will help keep it from appearing as a canned automated message.

Pay attention to messaging or you can lose it — Google has announced that they reserve the right to revoke business messaging for those businesses that don’t reply to customers within 24 hours. The automated message doesn’t count as a reply, so make sure you are keeping up with your customer conversations. Google considers prompt replies a part of their customer experience, so they don’t want businesses dragging their feet on GMB messages. Having desktop availability to GMB messaging will help a lot to keep you communicating on a timely basis.

Dealing with spam or offensive messaging — Always mark spam messages immediately, that will keep them from counting against your 24-hour response rate. If you receive spam or any offensive messages you can block the sender through the GMB settings page. Open the message then choose Block/Report and click Block. 

Future features — Google has discussed adding features such as requesting a quote or booking, but they have not announced any timetables for such upgrades. Keep checking your GMB account and messages for any future upgrades that may be of interest to you.
