Indiana PPC and SEO for Growing Hoosier Businesses

Indiana is one of the few Midwestern states still growing. Census estimates put the 2025 population at 6.97 million, up 2.8% since 2020, with gains from both domestic and international migration. Much of that growth lands in the Indianapolis suburbs. Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield now hold more than 350,000 people between them, and those new homeowners are searching for roofers, HVAC companies, dentists, lawyers and car dealers they have never used before.

The state's economy leans on making things. Manufacturing makes up nearly a quarter of Indiana's GDP, the highest share of any state, which gives B2B marketing an unusually large role. Plant suppliers, industrial distributors and trade schools all compete for the same skilled buyers and workers, and they win with useful technical content and well-structured search campaigns more than with broad awareness ads.

Indiana's markets also split by media region. Lake and Porter counties sit inside the Chicago market, Evansville and Clark County look to neighboring states, and Fort Wayne and South Bend run their own economies. On top of that, the Indiana Consumer Data Protection Act took effect January 1, 2026, and the state keeps its own do-not-call list that covers text messages. We build Indiana campaigns around those regional and legal differences instead of a single statewide plan.

Peak season

Mar to Oct (home improvement and event season)

Spring storms and summer heat drive roofing and HVAC demand, while May race season and fall football bring visitor spikes to Indianapolis and college towns. Heating and plumbing searches jump during January freezes.

Things to know

What changes when you market in Indiana

Five patterns we plan campaigns around, each backed by a published figure.

352,815

combined 2025 population of Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield [2]

Hamilton County suburbs are the prize

Four fast-growing Hamilton County cities north of Indianapolis now rival the state's second-largest city in combined size. Build dedicated location pages and ad groups for Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield rather than lumping them under Indianapolis.

No. 1

state for manufacturing share of GDP (nearly 25%), 2025 [5]

Manufacturing makes B2B marketing matter

With manufacturing at nearly one quarter of state GDP, industrial buyers are a large share of Indiana demand. Suppliers should invest in spec-driven product pages, LinkedIn targeting by job title and search campaigns on part numbers and capabilities.

+2.8%

population growth, 2020 to 2025 [2]

New residents need new providers

Indiana gained residents from other states and from abroad between 2020 and 2025. People who just moved have no loyalty to a local business yet, so new-mover targeting, review-rich profiles and 'near me' search visibility pay off.

66,189

small construction firms, 2022 [1]

Contractors face a crowded field

Construction has the third-largest count of small businesses in Indiana, so homeowners see many options for every trade. Reviews, fast response times and a clear service-area map on your Google Business Profile are what separate one contractor from the next.

$16.9B

visitor spending in Indiana, 2024 [4]

Visitors drive restaurant and lodging search

Indiana set a tourism record in 2024, helped by events in Indianapolis, the Indiana Dunes and college towns. Hospitality businesses should plan event-specific campaigns and keep Google profiles current ahead of major race weekends and game days.

Same team and tools everywhere. What changes is the calendar, the rules, and the searches people in Indiana actually type.

Regions

Indiana is several markets, not one

Central Indiana

Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Greenwood, Westfield

The state's largest and fastest-growing market, with heavy competition in home services, legal and healthcare.

How we adjust: Target suburbs individually and use review volume and speed-to-lead to compete with national franchises.

Northwest Indiana (the Region)

Hammond, Gary, Valparaiso, Merrillville, Lake and Porter counties

Part of the Chicago media market, with Illinois buyers crossing the line for lower taxes and prices.

How we adjust: Geo-target carefully so Chicago-area spend does not leak into Illinois unless you serve it, and highlight Indiana pricing advantages.

Northeast Indiana

Fort Wayne, Auburn, Warsaw

A manufacturing and medical device hub with a self-contained metro and moderate ad costs.

How we adjust: Combine local SEO with B2B campaigns aimed at the orthopedic and industrial supply chain.

Michiana

South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart

Anchored by the RV industry and a major university, with buyers on both sides of the Michigan line.

How we adjust: RV dealers and suppliers should run national inventory campaigns while local services target the twin-state metro.

Southern Indiana

Evansville, Bloomington, Jeffersonville, Columbus

A mix of river cities tied to Louisville and Kentucky markets, a large college town and rural counties.

How we adjust: Set radius targeting that crosses into Kentucky where you are licensed and adjust messaging for student-heavy Bloomington.

Big metros vs. small towns

Indianapolis proper holds about 13% of Indiana's people, and its suburban counties are where most of the state's recent growth has gone, so central Indiana is the most competitive search market. Outside that core, cities like Kokomo, Muncie and Terre Haute have far fewer advertisers per search, which keeps click costs lower and makes Google Business Profile rankings easier to win.

Indiana laws that shape your ads, texts, and website

Current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice; confirm specifics with your attorney.

Indiana Consumer Data Protection Act

Ind. Code 24-15 (SB 5, 2023) · January 1, 2026

Applies to businesses that control or process personal data of at least 100,000 Indiana consumers, or 25,000 if more than half of revenue comes from selling data. Consumers can opt out of targeted advertising, data sales and certain profiling, and the attorney general enforces it after a 30-day cure period, with penalties up to $7,500 per violation.

What it means for your marketing: Larger advertisers need a privacy notice and a working opt-out for targeted ads and pixel-based retargeting.

Indiana Telephone Solicitation of Consumers (Do Not Call)

Ind. Code 24-4.7 · In force; covers text messages

Indiana keeps its own do-not-call list, separate from the federal registry, and its rules reach calls and text messages sent to Indiana consumers from inside or outside the state.

What it means for your marketing: Text and call campaigns to Indiana numbers must be scrubbed against the Indiana list, not only the national one.

Indiana Regulation of Automatic Dialing Machines

Ind. Code 24-5-14 · In force

Restricts autodialed and prerecorded calls without the recipient's consent, with civil penalties up to $10,000 for a first violation and $25,000 for each later one.

What it means for your marketing: Automated voice drops and robocall follow-ups need documented consent before they reach Indiana phones.
