Marketing in Kentucky

Kentucky SEO and Google Ads for Bluegrass State Businesses

Kentucky is growing modestly, adding residents from other states and abroad since 2020 to reach 4.61 million people in 2025. Louisville and Lexington together hold about a fifth of the population, and their suburbs in places like Georgetown, Nicholasville and Elizabethtown are where most new homes go up. Northern Kentucky works almost entirely inside the Cincinnati market, which changes how ads and search results behave there.

Bourbon is a marketing story of its own. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail set a record with 2.7 million visits in 2024, and 76% of those visitors came from out of state. That traffic supports restaurants, inns, tour operators, retailers and short-term rentals across the Bluegrass, along with the Derby crowds each spring. Accommodation and food services employ more small business workers than any other Kentucky industry, so local hospitality competition online is real.

The median household income is $64,526, and 15.6% of residents live in poverty, which makes price clarity, financing offers and trust signals matter. The Kentucky Consumer Data Protection Act took effect January 1, 2026, and the state's telemarketing law treats repeated calls to numbers on its zero call list as a felony. Law firms also work under Kentucky Supreme Court advertising rules. We plan Kentucky campaigns with those factors built in.

Peak season

Apr to Oct (Derby season through fall bourbon and foliage travel)

Spring Derby events in Louisville and fall travel to distilleries and the Red River Gorge lift hospitality searches, while severe storms in spring and summer drive roofing and restoration demand. Winter brings heating and plumbing calls, especially in the eastern mountains.

Things to know

What changes when you market in Kentucky

Five patterns we plan campaigns around, each backed by a published figure.

2.7M

Kentucky Bourbon Trail visits, 2024 [5]

Bourbon visitors come from out of state

Most Bourbon Trail visitors travel from other states, plan multi-day trips and spend on dining, lodging and transportation. Hospitality businesses near distilleries should target searches from outside Kentucky and rank for 'near me' terms on the trip itself.

105,644

small business employees in accommodation and food services, 2022 [1]

Restaurants and lodging face real competition

Accommodation and food services employ more small business workers than any other Kentucky industry. Restaurants should keep menus, hours and photos current on Google and invest in review responses, since diners compare many options.

971,713

combined 2025 population of Louisville and Lexington [2]

Two metros, very different buyers

Louisville and Lexington hold about one in five Kentuckians and most of the state's paid search competition. Build separate campaigns and city pages for each, and do not assume a Louisville offer will land in horse-country Lexington.

$64,526

median household income, 2024 [3]

Price clarity builds trust

Kentucky households have less to spend than those in neighboring Illinois or Indiana. Visible pricing, financing options and payment plans on landing pages often lift conversion for contractors, dealers and medical practices.

50,958

small construction firms, 2022 [1]

Contractors are everywhere

Construction has the most small businesses of any Kentucky industry. Contractors win by owning their county in local search with reviews, project photos and service-area pages, rather than trying to rank statewide.

Regions

Kentucky is several markets, not one

Louisville Metro

Louisville, Jeffersontown, Shelbyville, Shepherdsville

The state's largest city and top tourism market, with logistics, healthcare and the Derby.

How we adjust: Expect the highest click costs in the state, and include southern Indiana only where you are licensed to serve it.

The Bluegrass

Lexington, Georgetown, Nicholasville, Richmond, Frankfort

Horse farms, a large university, Toyota's Georgetown plant and much of the Bourbon Trail.

How we adjust: Pair local service campaigns with tourism-intent keywords for distilleries, horse farms and lodging.

Northern Kentucky

Covington, Florence, Independence, Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties

Part of the Cincinnati metro and media market, with strong hotel and airport traffic.

How we adjust: Target the Cincinnati DMA but stress Kentucky locations, since many searchers start with Ohio results.

South Central and Western Kentucky

Bowling Green, Owensboro, Elizabethtown, Paducah, Hopkinsville

Mid-size cities tied to manufacturing, Fort Knox and Fort Campbell, and river commerce.

How we adjust: Run local SEO by city and time campaigns to military moving seasons near the two Army posts.

Eastern Kentucky

Pikeville, Hazard, Ashland, London

Mountain counties with long drive times, lower incomes and close-knit communities.

How we adjust: Facebook, Google Business Profile and word of mouth outperform paid search; keep offers practical and price-transparent.

Big metros vs. small towns

Louisville and Lexington together hold about 21% of Kentucky residents and most of the state's online ad competition. Outside them, Kentucky is a state of small cities and rural counties, especially in the east, where fewer businesses invest in SEO and a well-maintained Google profile can lead a whole county.

KRS 367.3611 to 367.3629 (HB 15, 2024) · January 1, 2026; assessments for data from June 1, 2026

Applies to businesses that control or process data on at least 100,000 Kentucky consumers, or 25,000 while earning over half of revenue from selling data. Consumers can opt out of targeted advertising, data sales and profiling, sensitive data needs opt-in consent, and the attorney general enforces it after a 30-day cure period.

What it means for your marketing: Larger advertisers need an opt-out for targeted ads and retargeting, and consent before using sensitive data such as health or precise location.

Kentucky telemarketing and zero call list law

KRS 367.46951 to 367.46999; penalties at KRS 367.990 · In force

Kentucky maintains a zero call list. Knowingly calling a listed number three times in a calendar year is a Class D felony, and other violations carry civil penalties up to $5,000 per offense enforced by the attorney general.

What it means for your marketing: Any outbound calling on leads must be scrubbed against the zero call list, with documented consent for each contact.

Kentucky attorney advertising rules

SCR 3.130, Part 7 · Current Kentucky Supreme Court rules

All lawyer advertising, including websites and social media, must comply with the Rules of Professional Conduct. Firms may submit ads to the Attorneys' Advertising Commission for an advisory opinion for a $75 fee, issued within 30 days.

What it means for your marketing: Law firm campaigns should be reviewed against Part 7 before launch, and high-spend TV or digital creative is worth submitting for an advisory opinion.
