Marketing in Tennessee

Tennessee Digital Marketing Agency Services: SEO, PPC, Web

Tennessee keeps adding people. The Census Bureau estimates 7.32 million residents in 2025, up 5.8% since 2020, with 292,727 net domestic migrants moving in from other states. Middle Tennessee absorbs much of that growth, and suburbs like Franklin, Murfreesboro, Spring Hill, Smyrna and Gallatin are filling with households that need contractors, dentists, auto dealers, insurance agents and restaurants they have never heard of.

Tourism is the other engine. Visitors made 147 million visits to Tennessee in 2024 and spent a record $31.7 billion, with Nashville alone accounting for $11.2 billion. The SBA counts 741,196 small businesses employing 41.5% of the state's workforce, and restaurants and hospitality employ more small-business workers than any other industry, so local search for food, lodging and entertainment is crowded in Nashville, Memphis, Chattanooga and Sevier County.

Tennessee also has its own rules. The Tennessee Information Protection Act took effect July 1, 2025, the ELVIS Act protects a person's voice from unauthorized AI imitation in advertising, and the state's do-not-call law treats marketing texts as solicitations. We plan campaigns with those rules in mind, especially for businesses using AI-generated audio, retargeting or SMS follow-up.

Peak season

Apr to Oct (music, festival and Smokies season), with a second Smokies peak around October color and the holidays

Nashville event weekends, CMA Fest and fall foliage in East Tennessee push hotel, restaurant and attraction ad costs up sharply. Home services follow the weather, with summer air conditioning calls and spring storm repair driving the busiest months.

Things to know

What changes when you market in Tennessee

Five patterns we plan campaigns around, each backed by a published figure.

$31.7B

Direct visitor spending in Tennessee (2024) [3]

Tourism money flows statewide

Visitor spending set a record for the fourth straight year in 2024. Restaurants, attractions and lodging should treat Google Maps, review platforms and travel-intent search as their primary storefront, especially ahead of event weekends.

$11.2B

Visitor spending in Nashville (Davidson County), 2024 [4]

Nashville is its own market

Davidson County alone captured more than a third of statewide visitor spending in 2024. Businesses there compete with national brands for every click, so specific landing pages, strong reviews and careful bid management matter.

292,727

Net domestic migration to Tennessee, 2020 to 2025 (Census Vintage 2025) [2]

New residents need new providers

People moving in from other states arrive without a go-to plumber, doctor or mechanic. Ads and content aimed at newcomers, such as moving guides and new-resident offers, work well in fast-growing suburbs.

175,458

Small-business employees in accommodation and food services (SBA 2025 profile, 2022 data) [1]

Restaurants lead small-business hiring

Accommodation and food services employ the most small-business workers in Tennessee, ahead of health care and retail. Expect heavy competition for 'near me' dining searches, and keep menus, hours and photos current on every platform.

$25M

Minimum annual revenue for TIPA to apply (effective July 1, 2025) [5]

TIPA mostly reaches larger companies

Tennessee's privacy law applies to businesses with at least $25 million in revenue that handle large volumes of consumer data. Most local service companies fall below it, but multi-location brands, dealer groups and ecommerce sellers should audit their tracking and opt-out tools.

Services

How we tune each service for Tennessee

Same team and tools everywhere. What changes is the calendar, the rules, and the searches people in Tennessee actually type.

SEO

Middle Tennessee suburbs like Franklin, Spring Hill and Gallatin absorb much of the 292,727 net domestic migration, so we write separate suburb pages instead of one Nashville page.

SEO in Tennessee →

Google Business Profile

Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge businesses ride October color and holiday traffic, so Smokies profiles need fresh photos, seasonal hours and posts scheduled ahead of each peak.

GBP management →

Google Ads & PPC

Nashville captured $11.2 billion in visitor spending in 2024, so restaurants and venues there bid against national brands, and event weekends like CMA Fest get their own budgets and copy.

Tennessee Google Ads →

Website design

TIPA reaches businesses with $25 million or more in revenue, so dealer groups and multi-location brands in Tennessee get opt-out links and updated privacy notices built into their sites.

Website design →

Social media

Because the ELVIS Act protects a person's voice from unauthorized AI imitation, Reels and video ads for Tennessee brands use licensed or original voiceovers, never cloned sound-alikes.

Paid and organic social →

Reputation management

With 175,458 small business employees in accommodation and food services, near-me dining searches in Memphis and Chattanooga are crowded, and owner-answered reviews help a restaurant hold its map spot.

Regions

Tennessee is several markets, not one

Middle Tennessee

Nashville, Franklin, Murfreesboro, Clarksville, Hendersonville, Smyrna, Spring Hill, Gallatin, Lebanon

The state's growth center, with music, health care and corporate relocations driving fast suburban expansion and the highest ad costs in Tennessee.

How we adjust: Build separate local pages and campaigns for each suburb rather than one 'Nashville' campaign.

West Tennessee

Memphis, Bartlett, Jackson

A logistics, medical and music economy built around the Mississippi River, FedEx's hub and a deep food and blues tourism scene.

How we adjust: Focus on reviews, Local Services Ads and clear pricing, and test Facebook and YouTube for awareness.

East Tennessee and the Smokies

Knoxville, Sevier County (Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge), Oak Ridge

University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge employers in Knoxville, next to a heavy tourism market around the Great Smoky Mountains.

How we adjust: Split budgets between year-round local services in Knoxville and seasonal visitor campaigns for the Smokies.

Chattanooga and Southeast Tennessee

Chattanooga, Cleveland, Hamilton County

An outdoor recreation and manufacturing hub that draws customers from north Georgia and Alabama.

How we adjust: Target across state lines and promote outdoor and tourism offers alongside local services.

Tri-Cities

Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol

A mountain region with an older population, health systems and manufacturing, sharing a market with southwest Virginia.

How we adjust: Run cross-border campaigns and lean on trust signals like reviews and longevity in the community.

Big metros vs. small towns

Nashville and Memphis together hold about 1.33 million of Tennessee's 7.32 million residents, and the paid-search fight is fiercest in Nashville and its suburbs. Across the rest of the state's 95 counties, many towns have only a handful of competitors per trade, so a well-built website, an active Google Business Profile and steady reviews can win the map results at a fraction of metro ad costs.
